一些绝经期较早的人患乳腺癌的风险可能会增加, according to research led by scientists at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah (the U) and the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the U.

研究人员发现,在46岁之前经历更年期的女性患乳腺癌的可能性几乎是男性的两倍 breast cancer as other women of similar ages. Their relatives were also more likely to have breast, prostate, or colon cancer. The study is published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI),

“[Women with POI] are at risk for a number of diseases...
Corrine Welt, MD

Connecting cancer and reproductive health

Primary ovarian insufficiency often runs in families, with inherited, genetic factors accounting for up to 43% of cases.

They also analyzed women with a related condition, early menopause, which occurs between ages 40 to 45.

2nd-degree relatives: Aunts, uncles, grandparents, nieces, and nephews

30% increased risk for breast cancer
50% increased risk for colon cancer

1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree relatives: Great-grandparents and first cousins

30-60% increased risk for prostate cancer

In addition to the UPDB, Then, those individuals were cross-referenced with the Utah Cancer Registry该机构追踪了该州的癌症发病率和死亡率.

Nicola Camp, PhD

Results on familial cancer risk came from more than 26,在癌症登记处和UPDB中有代表的500名亲属. “犹他州人口数据库是一个多源数据资源,拥有超过10亿条与健康相关的记录, 50 years of cancer data, 至少是四代人的家庭结构.5 million people,” Camp says.

According to Welt, 这些基本过程中的缺陷既会损害卵巢的健康,也会增加细胞分裂失控的可能性, a hallmark of cancer.

For now, however, they offer answers. “Having an explanation helps them find closure.”
